Sahih Muslim Hadith 3949 – Leasing Out Land

[3949] 114 – ( … ) It was narrated from Abü An-Najâl, the freed slave of Râfi' bin Iadlj, from Râfi', that Zuhair bin Râfi' – who was his paternal uncle – (He) said: "Zuhair came to me and said: 'The Messenger of Allah forbade something that was beneficial for us.' I said: 'What is that? Whatever the Messenger of Allah says is right.' He said: 'He asked me: "What do you do with your fields?" I said: "We rent them, 0 Messenger of Allah, in return for (what grows on the edge) of the spring, or for several Wasq of dates or barley." He said: "Do not do that. Cultivate them, or let them be cultivated by others, or keep them."
